China expresses concern about India missiles on border


China has expressed concern about India’s plans to put advanced missiles along the border between the two countries.
Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Thursday that maintaining peace and stability in the border region was an "important consensus" reached by the two Asian countries.
He added that India could put more efforts into regional peace and stability rather than the opposite.
"We hope that the Indian side can do more to benefit peace and stability along the border and in the region, rather than the opposite," Wu said, without elaborating.
The remarks came in response to media reports about India's plan to put highly-developed cruise missiles along its border with China.
Indian military officials say the plan is to equip regiments deployed on the China border with BrahMos missiles, made by an Indo-Russian joint venture, as part of ongoing efforts to build up military and civilian infrastructure capabilities there.
This comes amid a long-festering border dispute between the world's two largest countries by population.  
Leaders of the two countries pledged last year to defuse the border dispute, which dates back to a brief border war in 1962, though the disagreement remains unresolved.
China lays claim to more than 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) ruled by New Delhi in the eastern sector of the Himalayas.
India, however, says China occupies 38,000 square kilometers (14,600 square miles) of its territory on the Aksai Chin plateau in the west.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping when he visits China next month to attend the G20 summit.

Iran, Turkey, Qatar mull land route amid Saudi crisis

Turkey seeks to establish a land route via Iran for trade with Qatar which has relied on both countries for sourcing food since a diplomatic crisis broke out with Saudi Arabia. Turkish Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci on Saturday was in Tehran where he was expected to discuss using Iran’s land route to facilitate trade with Qatar, Anadolu quoted him as saying. "We're thinking about alternatives for land trade routes with Qatar but the easiest way is passing through Iran," Zeybekci said, according to the news agency.  He traveled to Tehran to attend the swearing-in of President Hassan Rouhani along with delegates from around the world.
